The diversion of those funds which we all contribute to every time we fill up has led to highway congestion.

Study after study has shown that when freeways are built, more traffic will generate and cause congestion. It's a demonstrated cycle. Ironically, it is the building of the freeways themselves that lead to congestion.

The politicians would rather use our high-way funds for airports, subways and rail systems which seem to have a problem carrying their own weight.

Highways don't pay their own way. The loss of property tax revenue alone harms local governments when neighborhoods or farmland is taken out of production and used for ever-expanding freeways.

You can add more trains to an already existing railline without eating up more land.

Joe the Plumber isn't very fond of Sarah Palin, lambasting her for supporting John McCain's Arizona senate primary race.

He had something interesting to say about the Teabaggers too:

"The birthers, the truthers — if people are trying to bunch them [with teabaggers], that would kill us. That just pushes away Democrats and independents who might come out for our cause otherwise."

Heck, my impression is that the "birthers" and "truthers" are mainstream teabaggers!

I'll take deuce at his word on this one, he says that FL had already purchased the right-of-way. That takes nearly as much farm land as highways, which leads me to believe that we are not talking about an existing rail-line.

Highways would have come a long way to paying their own way *if* the gasoline and diesel (big truck fuel) taxes weren't diverted into airports, subways, and yes, commuter rail lines for the past twenty or more years.

As far as your "study after study" remarks are concerned, I might suggest that is more a reflection on suburbanization and local economic growth building up around interstate highways.

While I hate to see valuable farmland being converting into bedroom communities, this is strictly a local issue, and is one that is difficult to find an easy solution for. It also says something about the producers in this country not wanting to live in the cities if they have a choice. See also: "white flight" "ghettos" and "crime". To be clear, successful minorities don't want to live in those areas either. See "Tiger Woods" "OJ" and maybe even "JayZee". How about "Oprah"? She maintained a place in the woods just west of me for over a decade. Casious Clay (aka, Mohammed Ali) was also a long-time neighbor. Both were pretty close to an Interstate, too.

For every lane of freeway that is added to an urban road system, hundreds (sometimes thousands) of homes and businesses are displaced. Where do they move? Why, further out on the fringe of the urban area, ad infinitum! It's like a dog chasing it's own tail. You never catch up, eh?

Local governments should share in gas taxes on the basis of lost property tax revenue. They should be free to spent that revenue as they see fit. In my own community, investments in mass transit have revitalized the urban core and greatly slowed sprawl.

We're not talking about an urban setting in the Tampa-Orlando corridor. It seems to be an entirely new RR right of way that we're talking about, which makes it no different from a new highway. It is citrus country. That's the problem as I see it other than that hickory smoke rising . . . in the BBQ smokers. The ribs and beef brisket is almost done!

No, absolutely not. Gas taxes should go to those that pay the taxes, which are the vehicle users every time they fill up. That means that those taxes are meant to self-sustain and provide improvements for our highway network. If a local governing authority wishes to add additional taxes, as is the case in Chicago and NYC, good for them, they are free to use those receipts for whatever they chose. Kinda strange tho that both of those areas have heavy tolls even after assessing local fuel or sales taxes for anyone who actually wants to drive around their fair cities, isn't it? NY-NJ Port Authority levies ridiculously high bridge tolls, and Chi-town has an extensive tollway system.

As I mentioned before, it's a local issue, as provided for in the Constitution. I hate repeating myself, since I noticed that once again, you have failed to address the essence of my remarks.

PS, since Crist seems to have signed off on this, it is merely one more reason why he will be defeated in the upcoming Senate primaries by Marco Rubio.

...and why Republicans will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in the general election, putting another Demo in the Senate.

Things are getting testy, nasty and tense over the passage of Health Care. Just when the Congressional folks from both parties were calling for an end to the supercharged rhetoric, guess who chimed in?

Ol' Sarah, that's who! She twittered "Reload!" and "aim for Democrats", complete with bullseye targets!

She must be bucking for Tea Party sainthood, eh?

ummm, news-flash:

Targeting candidates is nothing new. This is just a bunch of nonsense lib smoke-screen spin. You can't really believe the nonsense you just posted, can you?

I agree with Sarah, it's time to reload, align our sights on targets in order to end their respective careers. At the voting booth.

I'm really ashamed of you here, ATT. I know you know better than that, yet you are willing to jump in and make ridiculous claims. Did you watch Beck today? He pointed out at least 12 instances of actual violence from the left, most of which were under-reported, if reported at all.

By all means, post a link to a so-called "leftist" candidate or proposition that features the language "reload" or telescopic bullseyes in their graphics.

Palin once again demonstrates her dingbat sense of timing and language. I think no one can really know if she'll run for president in 2012 - I think she's waiting for "divine intervention" to make the call for her.

I missed his program - just like I do every other day. It is not an accident.

Why, because the victims were Republicans? I would certainly think that the out-of-control teabaggers could target Republicans as well as Democrats, perhaps even be angrier at the Republicans for failing to stop health care legislation.

Rich, a question for you - is using the language of hunting and eating prey conducive to working towards concensus in government?

I would surmise that there is no intention from the teabaggers to work toward consensus - not even within the GOP.

The historic intolerance of the far-right-wing that was once expressed as racial has now found release against those deemed to lack "purity" - this time in political philosophy rather than skin color.

And all those "kill Bush" "Bush = hitler" "bush = satan" "bush = chimp" - that's just OOOZING with tolerance and consensus building.

Is this personal invective useful? Probably not. But to pretend it only exists on one side of the aisle or is something new is silly.
